Our Mission Statement
The Hidden Opponent is an advocacy group that addresses the stigma attached to athlete mental health. Mental health is not talked about enough and it is time for a change! Our mission is to advocate and fundraise for the support of mental health for athletes around the globe.
Mental Health by the Numbers
–Around 20% of the world’s children and adolescents have mental disorders or problems (World Health Organization).
–1 in 5 young people (age 13-18) has or will develop a mental illness in their lifetime (National Alliance on Mental Illness). That being said, it is a 5 in 5 issue that we all need to address.
–1/2 of all mental illnesses show early signs before a person turns 14 years old, and 3/4 of mental illnesses begin before age 24 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
–5.2% of college athletes have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (NOCD).
–People with a mental health issue are generally nonviolent. In fact, only 3-5% of violent acts can be attributed to people with a serious mental illness (USC School of Social Work).
-More than 43 million Americans struggle with mental illness (State of Mental Health in America 2018).
-Only 36.9% of those suffering from anxiety receive treatment (Fortune.com).
What We Do
We believe that all student-athletes should be able to speak openly about their mental health experiences without worrying about being judged or viewed as weak. Our platform help’s amplify the voices and needs of student- athletes.
We will bring light to the many issues and struggles that student-athletes face, raising awareness to break the stigma of mental health in athletic culture. We hope to give athletic programs, clubs, and society a different perspective on the student-athlete lifestyle.
This community is a safe space for all student-athletes to feel heard, supported, and loved.
If you are interested in helping The Hidden Opponent support student-athletes around the world, donate today! All donations are used to help raise awareness for student-athlete mental health and support our student-athletes.
